The pathologists agreed that the cause of death was strangulation. The woman was condemned for eight years, released in an amnesty after six. She said to journalists that during a quarrel that baptismal night, the drinking Rubtsov had a heart attack. Lyudmila never admitted guilt. The woman published a book describing the tragedy that the poet's friends called miserable attempts of self -justification.

In early June, Derbina appeared in the studio of the Malakhov program in order to once again talk about that fatal evening. They buried Nikolai Mikhailovich at the Poshekhonsky cemetery in Vologda.
