However, the career did not work out, after a while he left the service and began to give private lessons of Latin and Greek, and taught for some time in state educational institutions.

Over the years, the metropolitan life began to burden him, and in the spring or early summer he went to travel along Belarus, wandered around his native land with a staff in his hand, descended along the rivers along with the carrons, listened to the fairy tales and songs of the common people, and in the houses of the poor gentry, and in the palaces of wealthy magnates. According to biographers, in his wanderings he "bypassed all Belarus." Everywhere he wore a notebook with him, in which he recorded his poems and folk traditions, and only in the fall was returned to St.

Petersburg. In - Barshchevsky, together with other members of the literary circle, consisting mainly of immigrants from Belarus, was engaged in the publication of the annual almanac in Polish “Niezabudka” “forget -me -not”. In his books there are fabulous, mythical characters - sorcerers, witches, werewolves, dragons.
